Directions: Answer the following questions in complete sentences to the best of your ability. You may use the short story books IN CLASS ONLY. This will be due, printed out, tomorrow.

  1. In “2 B R 0 2 B” by Kurt Vonnegut, a futuristic society is displayed.  What are the benefits and weaknesses of this society (explain both).  The benefits were that there were cures to everything and the poputlation was stabilized. I understand that population stabilazation is important, but to kill people before new people entert the world is stupid. If nobody is dying of old age or diseasing, then less people can be born.
  2. What is the importance of the mural painted on the hospital wall in “2 B R 0 2 B”? The painter says that “maybe we’re in it right now”. What is the importance of that statement?

  1. In “The Monkey Paw”, the concept of irony is on display. Irony is an unexpected result of an action. What were some of the ironic elements of this story?

When the man got his 200 pounds, but as a result his son died from a machine. The company paid Mr. white.  Also, when Mrs. White wishes his son alive, the son comes back as a zombie. Mr. White had to wish it away so that mrs, white wont get scared of him.

  1. Describe some of the ways in which Ernest Hemingway uses inference to tell the story of “Hills Like White Elephants”. Use examples from the text.

The man wants Jig to get an abortion. I came up with this because the man says, “ Its not really an operation at all. I know you wouldn’t mind it, Jig, its just to let the air in”

Also, I knew that the man and girl loved each other. I know this because the man said, “I love you now. You know I love you.” I also inferred that they were together because she was pregnant and they loved each other.

  1. In “Hills Like White Elephants”, we learn that the couple is discussing the possibility of an abortion. Do you feel that the woman has already made her decision prior to the conversation? What evidence do you have to support this claim?

No, she didn’t make her mind up before the conversation. At first the girl is strongly against it. Then as the man is talking to her about it, she gives in. Then at the end she decides to get one. She went into the conversation against it and then she gives into the man’s wishes.

inference

Jamie heard her phone in the other room. She ran to get it.

“hello?” She whispered.

“Hey. Me and Alison are on our way.” The voice said.

“oh, sam, it’s you. My phone almost woke up my entire house. Haha whats up?“ Jamie said still very quietly.

“ Yeahh. We are down your street. Come out.” Sam said. There was music in the backround from her radio.

Jamie grabbed her jacket, stuffed pillows in her bed and walked out the back door. As she was waiting in the cold dark she saw lights from a distance and then a car soon stopped in front of her.

“Hey. Get in. We are going to be late!” sam said in a worried tone.

“okay. Where are we going. Im tired.” Jamie moaned

“ We are going to drive around. Then Jarrod will text me with the address.”

“okay, well it looks like you are out of gas.”

“ you’re right. I don’t want to go to the gas station after the thig. I will be totally wasted”

“ Hhaha. Yeah. I’ll drive home. IM not drinking there.”

“sweeeet.”

“Jarrod texted me, its fifteen minutes away.” Sam said

“ okay” Jamie sighed and put her ipod in.

Im sitting here on my 2000 dollar mac laptop in Pascack Valley High School and what I'm reading is truly chilling. The U.S spends more per student on elemntary and high school education than most developed nations do, yet those nations are a lot more advanced than us.  At Anacostia High, 24 percent of kids graduate and 21 percent read at grade level. That means that 79 percent don't read at grade level. I think that it is all insane. By reading this I feel extremely lucky for attending PV and having my own laptop when some high schools don't have computers that work. What Rhee is doing is very helpful to all schools and I think its great.
